Copycat Publix Sprinkles Sugar Cookies - a delicious homemade version of my son's favorite grocery store sugar cookies with sprinkles.
Mommy, can I have a Cookie?
I've been taking my kids to Publix since they were babies. And when they were old enough to eat a cookie, I would always take them by the bakery to get their free Publix spinkles sugar cookie. Now they are 18 and 15. My daughter can't have gluten, but my 15 year old son is still obsessed with those Publix sugar cookies. One is not enough any more and he insists on getting a whole box of them. I think he asks me every time I go to the store, can you get the Publix cookies? So I decided it was time to try to make them from scratch. Homemade is always better, don't you think?
These Cookies are SO Easy to Make
These Copycat Publix Sprinkles Sugar Cookies are super easy to make. You can mix up the dough really quick and have them baking in the oven in under 20 minutes. The key to making them soft and chewy is not to bake them too long. Bake them for 8 minutes max!
How to Make Copycat Publix Sprinkles Sugar Cookies
- Using a hand mixer, cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl. Blend in an egg, milk, vanilla and almond extract.
- Add the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
- Drop heaping teaspoonfuls of cookie dough onto cookie sheet. Roll into a ball, dip in sprinkles, then place back on sheet and flatten with the palm of your hand.
- Bake at 400°F for 7-8 minutes. (Do not over bake or they will be too crispy.) Let cool completely and enjoy!

Copycat Publix Sprinkles Sugar Cookies
Ingredients
- ½ cup unsalted butter softened
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon almond extract
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ cup sprinkles
Instructions
- Heat oven to 400°F. Line sheet pans with parchment paper or silicone mat. Set aside. Pour sprinkles into a small bowl. Set aside.
- Mix thoroughly in large bowl the first 3 ingredients. (I used an electric hand mixer to make it quicker, but you can also mix these by hand.) Blend in egg, milk, vanilla and almond extract.
- Stir together in another bowl the flour, baking powder, salt, baking soda. Mix these dry ingredients into butter mixture. Drop dough by rounded teaspoonfuls about 2 inches apart on prepared sheets. Take each mound of dough and gently roll into ball, then dip into bowl of sprinkles. Place back on cookie sheet and gently press with the palm of your hand.
- Bake cookies for 7-8 minutes. Don't overbake. If you want soft and chewy cookies, you don't want to bake them too long. Cool on wire rack. Makes 3 dozen cookies.

These were so delicious! Great flavor and wonderful soft baked texture. I only had salted butter so I used a little less salt and they still tasted amazing. I’m not sure they taste like Publix cookies but I don’t even care because they are delicious.
Lise Ode says
So happy you enjoyed this recipe! They taste a little different because they don't have the preservatives, lol. 🙂
Lori M says
They were great! Not fluffy at all if you do them for 8min. Chewy just like they should be. Thanks!
Katie says
I’m a little confused.. teaspoon size dough that makes 3 dozen cookies? Are these supposed to be the size of coins?
Lise Ode says
Recipe says "rounded teaspoonfuls" so it's actually more like 2 teaspoons-ish. They are a similar size to the Publix cookie after they're baked.
Phoebe says
The recipe left some things out like what to do with the butter and sugar, so i had to figure it out on my own. I also did not enjoy these cookies very much and did not think they tasted like the publix one at all.
Anu says
Hi,
I was wondering if I could make the cookie dough a day in advance and refrigerate it.
Kate says
Can you use a cookie cutter with this recipe? If so, how thin do you roll the dough?
Katsa says
Please please please do the chocolate chip cookie recipe for Publix? I have food allergies so I can’t have them anymore so I have to make it myself and I miss having them from when I was a kid and I really really really want to make them. please help me out.
Lise Ode says
What foods are you allergic to?
Emily says
These turned out good; however, I did not think they were like the Publix cookies. I was looking forward to making these, and was honestly pretty disappointed. I've never left a review on a recipe, but I'm genuinely pretty bummed. These are much more fluffy, cakey cookies than I consider publix cookies to be. That said, they tasted delicious and turned out great if you like fluffy cookies, but not what I was going for.

This is literally the only cookie my grandson will eat. Tastes exactly like the real thing!
Lise Ode says
Your grandson has great taste. I love this cookie too!

Ok so some back story… I made some chocolate chip cookies and my family was terrified because they were so bad LOL. So last week I was craving some Publix cookies but the nearest Publix is like and hour and a half away, so I looked up “copycat Publix cookies” and came across this one!! And I just wanna say, this is the most edible thing I’ve ever baked!! THEY ARE SO GOOD im gonna make these all the time!!! Love love love
Lise Ode says
Hi Ren, Yay! I'm so happy that you love these cookies! Enjoy!!
Marty Llew says
Loved these cookies so much I've made them twice this week! Quick question: How do I get my cookies to spread like yours? Mine had tall domes so I had to press them down with a spatula to flatten them after I baked them.
Lise Ode says
Hi Marty, So glad you're enjoying this cookie recipe! You can get them to spread by pressing the dough balls slightly with the palm of your hand before baking. Let me know if that helps.
Jordan says
How long do these stay good for?
Lise Ode says
They taste best in the first few days. You can freeze them to last longer.
georgia says
I just made this recipe and the cookies turned out really well, but not your publix cookie.
Mordecai says
These were definitely fun to try! I absolutely love the cookies there ever since I was a little kid. I even applied to a Publix years later and mentioned my love for it that helped me in an interview to where I later got to work at the bakery there for a short period of time! I did have to substitute my flour a little bit with some cake flour as I ran out of my usual all-purpose and figured cake batter extract would be okay in replacement of the almond extract since a member of my family is allergic. I centered my trays a bit too low to where my first batch got a little burnt at the bottom, but other than that the rest were great!
Ryleigh says
This recipe was amazing! Everything my family loves about the Publix cookies, but better! Very quick and easy too!
Lise Ode says
