WHAT YOU NEED
INGREDIENT NOTES
Oreos: Make sure you buy double-stuffed Oreos, if you get the regular-sized Oreos, the stick and candy corn won’t fit (details below). Even the “most stuff” Oreo would be a good option. Find these at any of your local grocery stores.
Chocolate coating: For this, I used chocolate almond bark. It works really well because it gives it a smooth finish and dries quickly.
Candy decorations: The intricate details of the cookie and what completes the cute turkey face! Candy eyes and candy corn are needed for this obviously, the eyes of the turkey and the candy corn for the turkey’s “feathers” and “beak”! Find these at Walmart or at any local craft store.
Lollipop Sticks: Buy skinny lollipop sticks from any craft store near you or on Amazon.
HOW TO INSTRUCTIONS ON Decorating Oreo Cookies like a Thanksgiving Turkey
Begin by melting your almond bark in a microwave safe bowl according to the directions on the package you use.
Insert the stick into the stuffing of the Oreo until it is in the middle. Half of the time they crack so don’t use those ones, but to make sure the Oreo and lollipop stick hold together, open up the Oreo and put a little bit of the almond bark inside in the center of the cookie making it like glue to hold the Oreo together. If you do this, stick them in the fridge for a few minutes to let them harden.
Once hardened, or after you have some Oreo pops, fully submerge the Oreo in the coating and tap it on the edge of the bowl to ensure it has a nice smooth top.
While the chocolate is still melted, stick the 4 candy corn (the pointed white side) into the filling part of the Oreo. You might have to push it in there to get it to stick but don’t force it because you don’t want to break the Oreo. It also helps to put a little chocolate on the end of the candy corn and then stick it into the stuffing part. Make sure you hold it there until it stays on by itself.
Place the two candyeyes on and under the eyes place the candy corn beak. Place the candy corn upside down to give it the “beak” look.
Place on parchment paper and stick in the fridge for 5-10 minutes until fully cooled and hardened. Take pictures of your cute turkeys and enjoy!!
QUICK TIPS
Type of Oreo: Use double stuff Oreos NOT regular! To make sure the stick fits into the filling of the Oreo.
Lollipop stick: When inserting the stick into the filling, the Oreo may fall apart once you dip it in the chocolate. To avoid this, insert it into the stuffing part and then open up your Oreo carefully (or you could open it first and place the stick into the filling part). Then place a bit of chocolate in the middle of the Oreo using the chocolate like glue. Place in the fridge for a bit to make sure it hardens.
Decoration: When sticking the candy corn into the crevice of the Oreo, you put the pointed white end into the filling part of the Oreo, and to make sure the candy corn sticks you could either slowly and carefully push the candy corn into the stuffing/chocolate part or stick the end into the chocolate then stick it on and hold it until it stays.
Extra decoration: A great way to spruce up these turkeys even more is to add a "wattle" or the turkeys red neck! After the simple turkey cookies are cooled and hardened, get some store-bought white frosting or my homemade buttercream frosting and add some red food coloring to dye it red. Place in a piping bag and use the red icing to pipe a small squiggle to the right of the candy corn beak. Giving it an even more turkey look to it!
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I store these Thanksgiving turkey cookies? Store them in a ziploc or an airtight container for up to 5 days at room temperature or a week in the fridge.
Why won't my candy corn feathers stick? If you have some trouble with the candy corn feathers, dip the white end of the candy corn into your chocolate and stick it in. Hold it there for a few seconds until it sticks. If you have more questions there's a step-by-step tutorial video below.
Can I use regular Oreos for this? Regular-sized Oreos will not work for this because there is not enough filling in the middle. Meaning the lollipop stick probably won't fit into it.
Can I use gluten-free Oreos? Of course! Just make sure you use the double-stuffed gluten-free Oreos.
Why do my Oreos keep breaking when I insert the stick? If this keeps happening, grab a new Oreo and open it slowly and carefully. push in the stick halfway through the Oreo so it is submerged by the filling and Put a little bit of the melting chocolate in the middle of the filling. Close the Oreo and let it set so it stays together.
