What You Need
Ingredient Notes
Brownie Mix: Choose your favorite brand of brownie mix (fudge or chewy varieties work best for a rich texture), and follow the instructions on package. We used two boxes.
Eggs, Vegetable Oil, and Water (for the brownie mix): Standard additions to most brownie mixes that help create the structure and moisture. You can substitute water with milk for a richer flavor.
Chocolate Chips: Use semi-sweet chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips to add to the brownie batter.
Chocolate Frosting: We used store-bought chocolate frosting to keep this recipe quick and easy. If you prefer homemade, try my chocolate buttercream recipe.
White Icing: Use ready-made decorating icing or make a small batch of homemade buttercream frosting (recipe below). This is for drawing the football laces on top of the brownies.
Baking Pan: A 9x13-inch pan works best for brownies that are thick enough to cut into football shapes but not too thin.
Football-shaped Cookie Cutter (optional): For consistent and neat football shapes, though you can also cut the football shape freehand with a knife. We used a 3" cookie cutter.
How to Make The Best Football Brownies Recipe
For the Brownies: In a large bowl, with an electric mixer, mix up your favorite brownie mix according to the package instructions. (I used two brownie mixes to make them thicker.) Pour brownie batter into a 13" x 9" baking pan lined with a large piece of parchment paper that over hangs. Sprinkle chocolate chips on top. Bake brownies according to package directions. (I baked mine for about 40 minutes at 350°F.)
Let cool on a wire rack and cut into football shapes using a 3" football shaped cookie cutter. You should be able to get about 14-16 football shaped brownies from this batch. Store scraps in an airtight container and use as you wish.
For the Chocolate Frosting: Use your favorite store bought chocolate frosting. Frost the football shaped brownies just on the tops.
For White Frosting Laces: Next, make a small batch of homemade buttercream frosting, recipe follows (or use store bought vanilla frosting, if desired). For the homemade white buttercream, place butter, sugar, heavy cream and vanilla in a bowl and beat with an electric mixer until creamy. Pour into a pastry bag or piping bag and cut the corner to make a small round hole for piping. (Or use a small round tip such as a #5 pastry tip.)
To pipe laces, pipe a straight line across the top middle portion of the football. Then make three lines across to form the football laces. Serve immediately. Store them covered at room temperature for 24 hours or in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Quick Tips
Chill the brownies before cutting: Let the brownies cool completely before cutting into football shapes.
Use a cookie cutter for uniform shapes: A football-shaped cookie cutter ensures evenly sized brownies, but you can also cut them freehand with a sharp knife.
Pipe the laces with precision: For clean and sharp laces, use a small round piping tip or a plastic bag with the corner snipped to control the icing flow.
Keep brownies in the fridge: After decorating, store the brownies in the fridge to set the frosting and icing, making them easier to handle and serve.
Serve on cute football themed tray: When it's football season, find football themed party supplies at craft stores or department stores. Note: I found the napkins/football placemat at Dollar General. The football field tray is from Aldi.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I don’t have a football-shaped cookie cutter? You can easily cut the brownies into the shape of a football freehand using a sharp knife. Draw an oval outline on parchment paper as a guide.
How can I prevent the brownies from sticking to the pan? Line your baking pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil, leaving some overhanging on the sides. This makes it easy to lift the brownies out and prevents sticking.
Can I make this perfect sweet treat ahead of time? Yes! You can make them a day ahead and store them in an airtight container. For the best results, frost and decorate them after cutting them into football shapes.
Do I have to add chocolate chips to the batter? No, you do not have to add chocolate chips. Just omit them, if desired.
How many brownies can I make from two boxes of mix? The number of brownies will depend on the size of your football shapes. A standard 9x13-inch pan usually yields about 12-15 football-shaped brownies.
How do I make adorable football cupcakes? Check out my easy football cupcakes recipe on the Mom Loves Baking website. They are the most delicious chocolate football cupcakes. I also have a recipe for game day cupcakes that uses green buttercream with a grass tip as the football field with chocolate football cupcake toppers on top.
